Mayor's memo: this was the week AI filmmaking stopped being a question mark and started being an answer. A 135-minute AI feature dropped in theaters. Seedance 2.5 went global. An open-source model challenged the frontier closed-source leaders on the same Seedance 2.0 pipeline. Let's run through what matters.
1. ODYSSEUS: The Fall — The First Hollywood-Level AI Feature
Fountain 0 premiered ODYSSEUS: The Fall on July 17 — a 135-minute fully AI-generated film directed by Ash Koosha, the same team that brought Dreams of Violets to Tribeca. Powered by Kling AI, this is the first completely AI-generated movie produced at the level of a Hollywood blockbuster.
Variety covered the launch and the Hollywood Reporter broke the details. Two AI features from one studio in under a year. This is the signal that AI filmmaking has crossed from experimental curiosity to legitimate production pipeline. The trailer alone hit hard — I'd bet the full release changes the conversation around what "AI film" even means.
2. Seedance 2.5 Goes Global
ByteDance opened early access to Seedance 2.5 outside China via Jimeng and Dreamina. The headline feature: 30 to 180-second video generation in a single pass. That's up from Seedance 2.0's ~10-second limit. No more stitching clips together frame by frame — you can now plan scenes that last.
This changes the math on AI filmmaking entirely. Three-minute scenes mean real dialogue beats, real pacing, real directorial decisions at the shot level instead of the clip level. via @matchaman11
3. Kimi K3 vs GPT 5.6 Sol — The Open-Source Challenge
Higgsfield AI ran head-to-head comparisons: Kimi K3 (2.8 trillion parameters, open weights coming July 27) vs GPT 5.6 Sol (OpenAI's most expensive tier) directing the same Seedance 2.0 pipeline. The results were stunning — Kimi K3 held its own across three tests: a lava titan scene, a samurai animation, and a final boss fight.
The Kimi K3 version had this raw, painterly quality while GPT 5.6 Sol went full cinematic blockbuster. Same prompt, two distinct directorial visions. If Kimi K3's open weights deliver what the benchmarks suggest, the gap between open and closed models just evaporated.

4. Portugal's World Cup Campaign — 100M Views, ~80% AI
78 Films built Portugal's World Cup campaign film using Kling AI for ~80% of the visual content. Almost 100 million views. This is the blueprint: AI handles the heavy visual lifting, humans own the story and the editorial decisions. A hybrid production at global scale.
5. Pika Director's Suite + Motion Phrase Choreography
Two workflow stories worth your attention this week. First: Pika Director's Suite entered private beta — a video agent that takes your idea, plans, generates assets, and orchestrates 5 parallel Seedance 2.0 generations. Bring your own Anthropic key, and it auto-cuts results into editable segments. Tested by @aimikoda — zero regenerations needed.
Second: aimikoda's motion phrase choreography — instead of treating every storyboard panel as an isolated shot, group them into consecutive motion phrases that preserve momentum across cuts. Midjourney v8.2 for designs, GPT Image 2 for the board, Seedance 2.0 for the motion. 203 likes in a day says this technique resonates.
That's the week. We test everything we share — if you built something worth seeing this week, reply and I'll feature it in the next edition.
